Lapband revision or revision to Gastric Bypass (cross post from main board)

Hi everyone,

I am new to the board but have been reading it for awhile.  This is a long story but I will try to keep it brief....

I had lap band surgery in 2006 and was successful in losing about 50 lbs.  I stated this journey at 224 and my lowest weight was about 170.  About a year ago, I started to have mild acid reflux but did not think much of it.  I was hospitalized 2x's in 2008 for pneumonia and following my 2nd hospitalization began having VERY severe reflux.  After many tests, I was diagnosed with a large hiatal hernia and erosive esophagitis.  All of my doctors now believe that my pneumonia was aspiration related.  Since removing all of the fluid in my band I have regained approximately 30 lbs. and still have moderate acid reflux.

So....the surgeon I consulted suggested hernia repair, removal of the band and conversion to gastric bypass.  He indicated that he doesn't feel that the lab band is right for me given the degree of my esophagitis but did tell me if I was dead set on keeping my band, I should see another surgeon who is very skilled at Lap Band  I consulted with the suggested surgeon and he indicates hernia repair and re-positioning or replacement of the Lap band.

I am at a loss as to what to do - try the lap band revision and hope for the best or go the route of Gastric Bypass?  Either way, bariatric surgery is an exclusion on my insurance plan so I'll be a self pay.  I'd love to hear from others who have had revisions with from lap band to gastric bypass or those who have repaired or replaced their band.

I'm a new lapbander so don't have much advice but is a sleeve an option for you? It is the closest to being banded.  I don't know if your reflux would still be a problem with it though.    Good Luck!

UMMMMM, where are you considering going for your revision? Have you gone back to see Dr Rosen? Dr Iwanicki and Dr Rosen work together sometimes at Good Sam.

I have consulted with Dr. Alverdy at University of Chicago (who I love).  I went to see him as I was told my gastro that I needed a general surgeon who was familiar with band patients as it would appear that my issues are not necessarily created by the band.

Thanks for the info. Dr Rosen is familiar with the band as he does lapband surgery now and has been for several years. He also is a general and trauma surgeon.

My sister had the same problem and had to have her band removed. She didnt convert to RNY but still has restriction from scar tissue.
If it were me I would go with the conversion to RNY. I had RNY conversion from a Vertical Banded gastroplasty that was done in 1985 and it failed. I love my RNY and havnet had any weight gain to speak of except for thyroid issues.
Good luck with what you do. If ultamately your decision.
